John 21:15 says, “So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ He said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’” With the seaside breakfast over, Jesus gets right down to business. He calls Peter “Simon, son of Jonah,” his given name (1:42), not “Peter,” a stone. He’s no stone, except a sinking one, after denying Jesus three times. Ouch! Then he asks him, “Do you love me more than these?” These what? These anything: disciples, fish, his old ways of living, etc. Peter replies, “You know that I love you.” Peter’s “love” was a step down from Jesus’ “love,” indicating Peter’s hesitation. To begin restoring him Jesus says, “Feed my lambs.” Correction is rarely easy and sometimes painful. Let’s embrace God’s correction whenever he gives it.
