John 21:5-6 says, “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Children, have you any food?’ They answered him, ‘No.’ And he said to them, ‘Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.’ So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.” The disciples fished the Sea of Galilee waiting for Jesus but “caught nothing” (v. 3). After calling them “servants” and “friends” (15:15), he calls them “children” here, making this a teaching moment that “showed himself” (v. 1). But it’s not at all about fishing. The risen Jesus is showing the same word, the same wisdom, the same power and the same command to “catch men” (Luke 5:10) like they caught fish. God’s “kingdom comes” (Matthew 6:10) by obeying Jesus’ commands to grow spiritually and expand numerically. Let’s make sure outsiders see Jesus in us today.
