John 21:3-4 says, “Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing.’ They said to him, ‘We are going with you also.’ They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.” The disciples returned to Galilee because the angel at Jesus’ tomb and Jesus himself said to meet him there (Matthew 28.7, 10). At the seashore Peter says he’s “going fishing.” Naturally the rest follow the leader. “That night they caught nothing.” They’d seen this before in Luke 5:5. Once is an incident; twice is a pattern. This could be comical if God weren’t in the mix. He’ll use this as another teaching opportunity. Are we paying attention to learn more about him when we see such reoccurring incidents in our lives?
