John 20:24-25 says, “Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ So he said to them, ‘Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.’” When Jesus first appeared to his disciples in the upper room after his resurrection Thomas wasn’t with them. After being told they had seen Jesus, he was graphically resolute needing to see first and then believe. Thomas appears loyal but pessimistic (11:16, 14:5), so his words here are not surprising. He must have been from the Missouri, the “show me” state. If everyone were like him God’s Word would have no effect. Let’s make sure we don’t slip into “Thomas mode” today.
