John 20:22 says, “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” In the upper room Jesus appeared to his ten disciples the evening he rose from the dead. He told them he would send them “as the Father has sent” him (v. 21). How was that? Jesus spoke what the Father told him and did not speak on his own (12:50, 14:10). Likewise the Spirit followed that same pattern (16:13). So Jesus “breathed on them” as a picture of giving life to Adam (Genesis 2:7) and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit,” which foreshadowed Pentecost. So we, like the disciples did, follow the same pattern: do good, represent and testify of the Father and Jesus all in the power of the Spirit. And God will “give the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:7). Let’s give outsiders a good look at Jesus today.
