John 20:20 says, “When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.” Jesus was in the upper room with the 10 disciples for the first time (Thomas was not there, v. 24). Mary Magdalene had seen Jesus already and told them (v.18). He greeted them saying, “Peace be with you.” This had to have shocked all except John who already believed he rose (v. 9). So he says “peace” and “showed them his hands and his side.” Doing so confirmed it was really him, not a spirit. The wounds remained in his now spiritual-physical body (1 Corinthians 15:44) having spiritual characteristics that transcend physical realities. Imagine his explanations! Only “then” were “the disciples glad when they saw the Lord.” See their confusion transform into confidence. Though not seeing him yet, let’s live in resurrection confidence today.
