John 20:16 says, “Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him, ‘Rabboni’ (which is to say, Teacher).” After questioning the angels and then Jesus, whom she thought was a gardener, Jesus speaks Mary Magdalene’s first name. We don’t know why she didn’t recognize him. The same happened with the two unnamed disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13). Perhaps she was overcome with emotion, but that was not the same with them. All it took for her to recognize him was him calling her by name. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice” (10:27). Certainly Mary was a very devoted sheep. She called him “Rabboni,” a heightened form of rabbi (teacher, master) meaning my great teacher or my great master. No one could get near that position in Mary’s life because of all he did for her. Do we share Mary’s passion for Jesus?
