John 19:35 says, “ And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.” In the middle of describing events immediately surrounding Jesus’ death — how he died, how soldiers confirmed his death, and that it was all prophesied long ago — John writes this statement. Most commentators think he is writing about himself because he was there watching. He fits the description of “he who has seen…he knows that he is telling the truth.” And his purpose is clear: “so that you may believe.” This is one reason why it’s good to refer John’s Gospel to outsiders — it’s a firsthand witness for those who don’t believe. And doesn’t it describe what we should be too? We “have seen” and “testified” and told “the truth” that they “may believe.” Let’s be his good witnesses today.
