John 19:34,37 says, “But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out…. And again another Scripture says, ‘They shall look on him whom they pierced.'” Jesus hung on the cross dead, but Rome required confirmation. So a soldier “pierced his side,” the result being a gush of “blood and water,” blood corpuscles (cells) and serum. He probably stabbed the pericardium (sac around the heart) and possibly the heart itself. Both Adam and “the Last Adam” (Jesus, 1 Corinthians 15:45) sustained side wounds, giving life to their followers. Blood is necessary for justification, remission and atonement; water for sanctification, regeneration and purification. Blood points to the Lord’s Supper, water to baptism. Jesus’ sacrifice provided both. And it was predicted in the Old Testament (Psalm 22:16). Consider all these intricacies. Marvel at the precision. Our salvation is complete and perfect! Let’s praise him today.
