John 19:6 says, “Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “You take him and crucify him, for I find no fault in him.” Jesus had just been led out of the Praetorium. Not only severely whipped, Jesus is now also ceremonially unclean having been inside a Gentile fortress. The Jewish religious leaders already judged Jesus guilty of blasphemy, so they want nothing more to do with him than to see him crucified. Seeing his own hope of releasing Jesus dashed by their rejection, Pilate flippantly tells them to “crucify him” while reaffirming Jesus’ innocence. The Jews didn’t have the right to execute capital criminals. Even in extreme physical weakness Jesus exposes Jewish and Roman corruption. He exposes ours too. Let’s admit our own weaknesses and not walk in them but walk in his power and humility today.
