John 19:4-5 says, “Pilate then went out again, and said to them, ‘Behold, I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in him.’ Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, ‘Behold the Man!'” Pilate had Jesus flogged in the Praetorium. Most likely he hoped that flogging him would satisfy the Jewish mob. Profusely bleeding seemingly from everywhere, Jesus emerges from the fortress “wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.” His tortured body was shocking to see. Pilate hoped his torturing him whom he found “no fault in” would satisfy the crowd. So he declares, “Behold the Man!” You couldn’t make any stronger case that this was the supreme injustice of all time. Yet God was in the details. Let’s give him thanks today for his marvelous salvation.
