John 18:39-40 says, “‘But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?’ Then they all cried again, saying, ‘Not this Man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.'” After declaring Jesus’ innocence, Pilate honors a Jewish custom of releasing one prisoner for Passover. Usually prisoners were guilty of a crime. Not in this case. Pilate found “no fault” (v. 38) in Jesus, but “Barabbas was a robber.” Pilate was evading his responsibility by putting it on the crowd to decide. Outsiders today do the same by promoting ideas like multiculturalism saying all the world’s cultures are equally valid. Truth and lies, right and wrong aren’t equal. Truth corresponds to reality but lies distort and deceive. Let’s avoid such nonsense and be God’s testimonies of righteousness and truth today among outsiders.
