John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them by your truth. Your word is truth.” Jesus says so much with few words. In his prayer in Gethsemane Jesus makes a big request and a bold statement. “Sanctify them by your truth” is the request. The bold statement is, “Your word is truth.” Truth is what corresponds to reality. Jesus also said he was the truth (14:6). Think how these 2 explanations tie together. Lies are the opposite of truth. If something is true/real, then it doesn’t have just one opposite. Everything else about it is false/untrue, making truth narrow by nature. Numerous lies refer to, “Enter by the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction” (Matthew 6:13). Truth pulls us into narrow corridors of godliness and service for God. This is why we stand apart from outsiders. Let’s embrace truth and God’s sanctification today.
