John 17:11b-12a says, “Holy Father, keep through your name those whom you have given me, that they may be one as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in your name. Those whom you gave me I have kept…” As Judas and the soldiers moved toward Gethsemane, Jesus continued praying for his disciples. His time on earth is rapidly closing. He said he “kept [his disciples] in [God’s] name.” He now asks the Father to “keep [them] through [his own] name.” At this point you’d think this should be a done deal, but even within the Godhead prayer is always operative. The goal is “that they may be one as we are.” The unity, mystery and majesty of the Godhead are ours as gifts. How can that be? We can’t even think what that’s like, let alone achieve it! Let’s revel in God’s graciousness today.
