John 17:3 says, “And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” Still beginning his prayer to his Father, Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane frames his confidence in him with these words. This is one of the few places in Scripture that defines “eternal life.” See also 1 John 5:20 and Matthew 7:23. Eternal life is knowing “the only true God (the Father) and Jesus Christ” himself. Many of the prophets (Jeremiah, Hosea and Ezekiel) described it in terms of a relationship of knowing God. Such relationships change us. Knowing God can only change us for good. Such a relationship needs to grow but the growth is on us, not God. The fruit of God’s Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) should be clearly evident in us. Today let’s demonstrate the Father and Jesus to outsiders this way.
