John 18:36 says, “Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from here.'” Pilate’s interrogation of Jesus continued. The charge against him was claiming kingship over the Jews (v. 33). Bypassing what he had done, he stuck with the accusation. His “kingdom is not of this world.” He doesn’t threaten earthly kingdoms so his servants (followers) don’t fight for them but work so that God’s “kingdom come[s]” and “his will [is] done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). This will show up “in the world” but not be “of the world” (John 17:11,14). In the meantime we remain in the world to be witnesses to outsiders like Jesus was to Pilate (1 Timothy 6:13). Let’s be and do Kingdom today.
