John 16:12 says, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” This is what Jesus said to his eleven disciples in the garden atop the Mount of Olives with spiritual shadows growing. He told them of his going away, the coming Helper (Holy Spirit) and his future ministry. He “still ha[d] many things to say,” but not at that point. Think of what was minutes away: Judas’ betrayal, Jesus’ arrest, the disciples fleeing, Peter’s denial three times, the trial in a kangaroo courts of Pilate (twice) and Herod (once), the Jews’ beating, the Roman whipping and finally his crucifixion. All in less than 9 hours! So this was not the time for more words. Aren’t you glad Jesus knows us so well that he “knows the things you have need of before you ask” (Matthew 6:8)? Let’s thank him for his mercy in our lives.
