John 16:7 says “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send him to you.” Training time was over. The next step beckoned. In Gethsemane Jesus gave the disciples his final words before his betrayal. Their first step was listening. The second was watching. The third was doing ministry with him. Now it was time to do it without him, but not without power. He was going to the cross. That would change everything as would the coming of “the Helper.” Without Jesus “go[ing] away” they would still only be listening, watching, following and doing with him. He would actually limit them at this point. They would go further and do “greater” (14:12) without him. Are we doing greater with his Spirit as our helper?
