John 15:9-11 says, “As the Father loved me, I also have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” Drawing from the vine and branches metaphor, Jesus gives us a glimpse inside God’s nature: love (1 John 4:8, 16). Perfect love exists between Father and Son. Jesus says we can abide in that love by keeping his Father’s commands like he kept them. This is possible through the Spirit’s power. But his word must first “abide in” us (verse 7) for us to know his commands. Then Jesus tells us his desire: that his joy remains in us. Love, joy, obedience, fellowship: let’s experience all of this today.
