John 15:5 and 8 says, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without me you can do nothing…. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be my disciples.” Jesus’ extended metaphor made an extremely important point: abide in him. Many years later the Apostle Paul would tell us we are positionally no longer “in Adam” but by faith we are now “in Christ.” But here Jesus says remain in him relationally. Without him we “can do nothing,” and are and have nothing! But by abiding we will “bear much fruit” and be his “disciples” that glorify the Father. This is the ‘secret’ of fruitfulness. Let’s abide in him continually by hearing his voice as we read his Word and commune in prayer. Tune our hearts to you, Lord.
