John 15:1 says “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.” With the Last Passover dinner concluded (14:31), Jesus leads the disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane at the foot of the Mount of Olives. As they approached the garden, it is likely he used the visual imagery of the vineyard there to describe himself as the “true vine.” By saying this he doesn’t mean he stands in contrast to ‘false’ vines. He is the “true vine” in the sense that he is distinguished from Israel, the Lord’s vineyard (Isaiah 5:1, 7). His Father, “the vinedresser,” takes tender care of the vine, also described in Isaiah 5. The care of his loving Father is similar to the committed care he has for us with the same attention to detail. Let’s thrive as Jesus did under the care of our heavenly Father today for his purposes and glory.
