John 14:18-19 says, “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. A little while longer and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also.” Still talking to the disciples just before his betrayal, Jesus said his departure would not make them “orphans,” without a parent or leader. His absence via death was a short (3-day) separation. He “will come to” them first by his resurrection: “you will see me.” And because he returned to life “you will live also,” in the same way he lives — forever! Notice his continuing caring presence. But even more, after his ascension he sent his Spirit showing our “adoption” into his family (Romans 8:15) by whom we call God “Abba, Father.” No more orphanage experience! As children of the King of kings, let’s bring honor to his name today!
