John 14:16 says, “And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Helper, that he may abide with you forever…” Still talking to his 11 disciples the night of his betrayal, Jesus told them what would soon unfold: he will send the Holy Spirit in his absence. This new information was hard for them to process, not knowing what would happen to Jesus and them. He was getting them ready and promised new divine resources. “Another” means one of the same kind, like him. “Helper” means one called alongside to support/help. Acts 2 records the fulfillment of this promise. “Abide with you forever” is one of many times John alludes to the permanency of our salvation. We also see the Trinity at work: Father, Son and Spirit all involved in saving us. Let’s make the power of the Spirit evident to our outsider friends today.
