John 9:4-5 says, “I must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Jesus said this after being asked whether sin in a man or his parents caused his blindness. Saying that he could only work in the daytime meant that he could only do God’s works while he was on earth, since he makes daylight as “the light of the world.” “The night is coming when no one can work” meant the period after his crucifixion. No work of God happened during those 3 days. After his resurrection Jesus calls us to “shine as lights in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation” (Phil. 2:15). Let’s be the brightest lights we can be in our corner of a dark world today.
