John 5:39-40 says, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of me. But you are not willing to come to me that you may have life.” This is part of another debate with unbelieving Jews. “You search” can also mean a command to search. If so, he is telling them to read the source book where they can find eternal life. He says it testifies of him. Think about it: Jesus is the incarnate Word; the Bible is the inspired Word. Both claim to be light (Jesus: 8:12 among many places; Bible: Psalm 119:105 among many places). Both are sources of truth (Jesus: 14:6; Bible: 17:17). Despite such strong resemblances, these Jews didn’t believe in him because they were spiritually blind. These were God’s people. So are we. We can blind ourselves too. Let’s read God’s book with open eyes today.
