John 3:32-33 says, “And what [Christ] has seen and heard, that he testifies; and no on receives his testimony. He who has received his testimony has certified that God is true.” John concludes his discussion of the uniqueness of Jesus as God’s ultimate spokesperson. Jesus supremely testifies — bears witness — of God. Christ’s words are God’s words. Unfortunately, comparatively few (“no one”) believe what Jesus says to their own shame and judgement. But whoever does receive Christ’s testimony knows that God is true. Not only that, believers receiving his testimony “certify” – provide a seal of approval (also used in 6:27) — of God’s reality. In fact, the word “true” means “not forgotten, not hidden, uncovered, true to fact.” No wonder believers face deception and hostility from the evil one! Keep your shields up (Eph. 6:16) as you certify God’s reality in your corner of the world.
