John 3:1-2 says, “There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus at night and said to him, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.'” For background info, Nic’s name means ‘victor over the people.’ He was a Pharisee, an extreme law keeper, well respected by people. He was also “ruler,” a member of the Jewish Supreme Court (Sanhedrin). Verse 11 describes him as “the [master] teacher of Israel.” In short, he was a big shot legally, spiritually and nationally. He said, “We know…” representing his colleagues. His admission is a stunner: “You are a teacher come from God…God is with [you].” Not come for God or representing God (which he did), but from God. Nic’s viewpoint admitted Jesus came from heaven and that God was still with him! He was extremely close to recognizing him as Messiah. Can we see why he later trusted Christ as such (19:39)? Let’s help prepare the way for others, whether big or little shots, to come to Jesus like Nic-at-night.
