Psalm 131:2 says, “Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.” David begins this psalm saying that his heart is not proud or arrogant (v.1). He also does not get into matters what will overwhelm him (v. 2). In that state is says he has “calmed and quieted” his soul like a weaned child. Weaning is a process a child goes through to progress from mother’s milk to solid food. The mother trains or disciplines her child through this procedure to change the dependency from childhood to adulthood. The parallel training in our spiritual life can be difficult, but God does it to move us along toward maturity. This is the only passage I can find that a person calms his own soul, a definite sign of maturity. I pray you’re all walking with the Lord as an adult.
