Psalm 130: 3-4, 8 says, “If you, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, that you may be feared…And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.” This psalm describes a person seeking and waiting for God’s forgiveness. Twice he uses the word iniquities. This Hebrew word is more intense than the typical word for sin. It has a heightened sense of deep depravity, radical and thorough going corruption. No one can stand in God’s sight with such evil. But God’s holiness is not only stronger than evil, it is also strong enough to pardon us from all such iniquities. Those who think they can earn their way to heaven show their gross ignorance of God’s nature. Thank the Lord our salvation hangs on Christ’s faithfulness, not ours.
