John 20:14-15 says, “Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?’ She, supposing him to be the gardener, said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’” Jesus appears near his tomb and asks Mary Magdalene the same question the angels did (v. 13). Thinking he is “the gardener” she repeats her inquiry for Jesus’ body. He had cast out 7 demons from her (Mark 16:9), so she felt a deep loyalty to, dependence on and reverence for him. But her grief clouded her thinking. Could a normal gardener overcome the Roman soldiers? Roll away the stone alone? Never! Let’s discipline our thinking to understand what’s really happening around us.
