John 19:16 says, “ Then he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away.” The Jews proclaimed their preference for a Gentile Caesar (v. 15) over Jewish Jesus, one of their own! The Jews had Pilate in a corner, so he turned it back on them. Both were losers. With that, Pilate was satisfied and “delivered him to them to be crucified.” No turning back now. Having been whipped to the extent that his back was torn open, Jesus would now prove that “the weakness of God is stronger than men” (1 Corinthians 1:25). That’s why Paul could say, “When I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). This is counterintuitive, unreasonable in the natural realm. But that seems to best illustrate God to outsiders. Let’s be like Jesus and not fight against what comes against us to be better witnesses for him.
