John 18:18-19 says, “Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself. The high priest then asked Jesus about his disciples and his doctrine.” At Annas’ house most likely in the courtyard Peter, having already denied Jesus once (v. 17) joined the temple officers warming themselves by the fire. What was he thinking? The denier with the arresters! Annas, “the high priest” emeritus, asked Jesus about “his disciples and doctrine.” This was an informal and unofficial inquiry, possibly trying to get incriminating information from him. Unlike Peter, Jesus didn’t sell out his disciples, promising earlier to lose “none” (v. 9). He knew the importance of loving, committed unity for and within his Body of believers. Do we? Let’s be like Jesus with all our brothers and sisters today.
