John 16:8, 11 says, “And when he has come, he will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: …of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.” Shortly before being betrayed in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus tells his disciples the third purpose of the Helper’s/Holy Spirit’s convicting work in the world. After mentioning “sin and righteousness,” he concludes with “judgment.” The “ruler of this world” is Satan (12:31, 14:30) and he “is judged.” Jesus defeated him on the cross when he died. Despite looking like a failure, it was completely the opposite. Jesus broke Satan’s power and condemned him. People are already broken and will likewise be condemned. That’s what Satan’s demise foreshadows for humanity. That’s why it is such a high privilege to be God’s witnesses. As God gives opportunity, let’s tell his story of hope and redemption to a broken friend today.
