John 16:1 says, “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble.” At this point in his last words to the disciples on the way to and now in the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus summarizes why he shared them: that they “should not be made to stumble.” He will warn them of other upcoming events. But here he says he doesn’t want them to “stumble.” This word means to be offended or cause offense. 1 Peter 2:8 says Jesus is “a rock of offense,” or the rock that people stumble over. Judas already had stumbled. The disciples would flee after Jesus’ arrest and Peter would deny him three times. But the eleven recovered and returned. Jesus offends everyone who doesn’t trust him. Outsiders can see him in us if we walk faithfully in his ways. Let’s make sure we’re not the offense today.
