John 15:15 says, “No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from my Father I have made known to you.” As Jesus continued to speak about the vine (Jesus) and the branches (us), he said the greatest love is when a person “lays down his life for his friends” (v. 14). He did that for us, making us his friends. Abraham is the only Old Testament person called God’s friend (2 Chronicles 20:7, Isaiah 41:8, James 2:23). Now we are too! Friendship has its perks: “all things that I heard from my Father I have made known to you.” In other words, full disclosure: as much as Jesus heard, he shared. That’s the whole New Testament. Let’s make sure we don’t miss reading it regularly, including today.
