John 14:5-6 says, “Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going, and how can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'” The night he was betrayed Jesus told his disciples “troubling” news (14:1): he was leaving for heaven but would return (v. 2). Thomas admitted they didn’t know where he was going or how to get there. Jesus’ response was unmistakable: it’s only through him since he is “the way, the truth and the life.” John’s gospel reiterates this throughout. Jesus is both inclusive and exclusive: everyone can come to God but only through him. One way, absolute truth and eternal life offend outsiders in today’s ‘tolerant’ society. It strikes at human pride. Let’s not cave to outward conformity but help them understand Jesus today.
