John 4:48 says, “Then Jesus said to him, ‘Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.'” Jesus returned to Cana in Galilee (v. 46) where a royal official came asking for a miracle for his son dying (47). Jesus’ response sounds rather harsh to man with such a need, but he was speaking of Galileans as a whole, who were Jewish people. Imagine that: God’s own people needed to see miracles to trust in Christ. Do we? Is our faith in him dependent on what ‘miracle’ he has done for us lately? Or do we know him well enough to understand and appreciate his character: his goodness, love, gentleness, forgiving heart, incredible power and wisdom? Consistent God-honoring faith depends on him/his unchanging character, not on less important things.
