Psalm 128:1-2 says, “Blessed is every one who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways. When you eat the labor of your hands, you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you.” The opening to this psalm makes the often repeated declaration that God’s goodness accompanies those who put God first. The first sign of that goodness is provision, specifically food. We might not think this is a big deal, but realize that 40% of the world goes to bed hungry each night. That doesn’t mean they’re starving, just hungry. Adequate food is a sign of God’s blessing and therefore should make us “happy,” which is the same Hebrew word as “blessed.” More signs of blessing will follow. (See Proverbs 30:7-8 and 1 Timothy 6:8 on food.) Last Saturday night a Chinese high school student asked me if I was happy. I said yes and asked why. She said all the Christians she knows are happy. What a great indicator of God’s blessing! Hopefully others routinely see all of us this way.
