Psalm 119:18 and 20 say, “Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from your law…. My soul breaks with longing for your judgments at all times.” This first verse shows an obvious dependence on God to “break open” (as one friend put it) the egg inside the shell, or the meaning of a verse of Scripture. It also is the verse that Clara Scott used in writing the hymn “Open My Eyes That I May See” in 1895. Despite strongly desiring God’s Word “at all times” (v. 20), the psalm writer still needed God’s help to understand. How much do we all need to pray the same before and while we read!
