John 17:18 says, “As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.” Still in the gardenĀ before being betrayed, Jesus speaks important truths to his Father. He said that he sent his disciples “into the world” as his Father sent him “into the world.” How did he do that? Well, Jesus came from heaven; they (and we) didn’t. Along with them (and us), he was born here. Like them he lived and died here. We will too. But more important is why the Father sent him (and he us). He sent him to “give light” (1:9), “not to condemn the world” (3:17), “to bear witness to the truth” (18:37), “to save sinners” (Titus 1:15) and “to live through him” (1 John 4:9). His mission, his witness and his life are all ours. Let’s give outsiders a fresh look at Jesus in and through us today.
