John 17:4 says, “I have glorified you on the earth. I have finished the work which you have given me to do.” In Gethsemane Jesus continued reviewing his ministry on earth in prayer to his Father while Judas was coming for him. He said he “finished the work” up to that point, which he described as his goal (4:34). After his work on the cross (19:28) he knew “all things were now accomplished (finished)” and declared so: “It is finished!” (19:30). At the end of his life the Apostle Paul said similarly, “I have finished the race” (2 Timothy 4:7). People who don’t focus on the finish line rarely finish well, or finish at all. If they do, they run poorly with stops, starts and distractions. How are we running? Are we looking for the prize, seeing our Savior, at the finish line? Let’s run each day like Jesus and Paul.
