John 17:2 says, “You have given him authority over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as you have given him.“ In prayer in Gethsemane Jesus said the Father had “given him authority over all flesh,” or over all people. He received this authority as the Son. Speaking of himself in third person, “He should give eternal life to as many as [the Father had] given him.” This matches what he said in 10:28, “I give [my sheep] eternal life…” Also mentioned earlier is the Father giving believers to Jesus (chapters 6 and 10). Collectively they show that the Godhead is intimately involved in our salvation, which is his gift to us. Let this wash over your mind: he loves us so much that he righted our wrongs, paid for our sins and gave us life to glorify him. Let’s daily serve him with deep gratitude.
