John 15:18-19 says, “If the world hates you, you know that it hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” Immediately after talking about love (v. 17) Jesus brings up “hate,” the strong detesting kind of hate. This is how the world feels toward us. This second mention (v. 16) that Jesus “chose [us] out of the world” makes us spiritual insiders with him and the Father. The world is outside of that, but some who believe the gospel will become insiders like us. Outsiders are too proud and self-centered to trust Christ. They’re also very broken. We don’t know who will trust him and join us. Let’s love them despite their hatred. Remember: someone loved us first.
