John 14:30-31 says, “I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.” Jesus concluded the Last Passover meal. Once more he linked love and obedience: “the Father gave me commandment” to die on the cross so the “world may know that I love” him. All of history’s hope hung on his obedience at this moment because “the ruler of this world,” the devil, was still ruling. He was working in Judas who would soon meet him in the Garden of Gethsemane. For us today the devil is a vanquished enemy. Death is too (1 Corinthians 15:54-55). So let’s also show the world we love him by our obedience today.
