John 13:37-38 says, “Peter said to him, ‘Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Will you lay down your life for my sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied me three times.'” At the Last Passover meal Jesus spoke of being glorified through the cross. Peter asked why he could not go with him, ignorant of what was coming, saying, “I will lay down my life for you,” perhaps alluding to Jesus’ comments in 10:15, 17-18. More likely he demonstrated his loyalty and bravado. Jesus blows the lid off that saying Peter would deny him “three times” before the morning. Let’s regularly make sure our desires and goals are aligned to God’s will and empowered by his Spirit. Better to humble ourselves in private than be humbled in public.
