John 11:38-39 says, “Then Jesus, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone.’ Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, ‘Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.'” Followed by the crowd, Jesus arrived at Lazarus’ tomb bristling or “groaning in himself.” Martha tries to stop him, not wanting to face of the nasty reality of the “stench” from his brother’s decaying body. Such putrid odor shows what sin does to us: alienates the spirit from God, immoralizes the soul, kills the body. This is a supreme stench to God’s holiness. But Jesus is “a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling aroma” (Eph. 5:2) so that we will be “the fragrance of Christ” (2 Cor. 2:15). What scent do outsiders pick up from us?
