John 6:24 and 26 says,“[W]hen the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus… Jesus answered them and said, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek me not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.” Today we hear about people ‘seeking Jesus,’ and generally that’s a good thing. What isn’t good is seeking Jesus for the wrong reason. The Jews sought him to get another handout, another freebie. For them it was the next meal. In the midst of a miracle they missed its intended purpose. They had a self-centered, welfare, what’s-in-it-for-me? mentality. God’s people can do the same if we’re not careful. Let’s be his people that seek him for the right reasons: his name, his glory, his kingdom.
