John 5:17-18 says, “But Jesus answered them, ‘My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.’ Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.” John wrote his gospel with great precision detailing the conflict Jesus had with the Jews. His statement about working with his Father sounds harmless enough, but the Jews knew what it meant: it was a statement of deity (repeated many times in John). If Jesus were not divine, he never would have claimed he was God in human form. Be glad there is no biblical uncertainty about Jesus’ identity. Our salvation rests on this foundational necessity.
