John 1:5 says, “And the light [Christ] shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” Here is a clear statement of authority and power. “Darkness not comprehending” light means the former could not overtake or control the latter (see same word in 12:35). As light automatically removes darkness, so Christ removes anything evil in the spiritual realm. However, when Jesus entered the darkness of the physical world, which John later represents as “evil deeds” (3:19), he didn’t automatically repel fallen humanity. Some were drawn to him while condemnation awaited others for rejecting him. This shows the deceitfulness of how strong physical and visible things are in our lives and how much we need in all things to walk in the light and by faith, not by sight.
