John 20:28-29 says, “And Thomas answered and said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Thomas, because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’” These words finish the first encounter Thomas had with the risen Christ. Having not seen him with the other disciples eight days earlier (v. 26) Thomas said he wouldn’t believe until he saw and touched Jesus’ wounds. After Jesus said in effect, ‘Go ahead,’ Thomas exclaims, “My Lord and my God!” This isn’t emotional language like, ‘Oh my god…’ but declarative: ‘You are my Lord and God!’ What little faith he had needed a sight boost. Speaking of all those living after his ascension, including us, Jesus said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed.” Let’s walk in faith like Thomas must have after seeing the risen Jesus.
